The number of adolescent girls in Uganda who get pregnant before attaining the age of consent has slightly increased to 25% over the last ten years. ZACHEDO Program Director discusses with Rotarians on possible interventions for reducing on the increasing teenage pregnancies in Uganda.

Community based condom distribution programs launched in Mukono district through the Community leaders. A Variety of information tools were provided to demonstrate how to properly use male and female condoms. Initiatives were discussed on how to prevent new HIV infections among adolescents and youth.
Farm clinics for women and youth in agri-business. These encompass practical sessions with research experts in areas of planting, breeding, markets, value addition and sustainable land management. This particular session focused on urban farming, climate change, harvesting and post-harvest handling.
Already trained youth and young women lead a short course on vocational skills in making of counter books for their fellow program beneficiaries. These sessions start off with short lectures then onto practical hands on experiential training.
Youth groups sensitized on entrepreneurship training programs and adopting purpose driven lives to enable them maximize their true potential and make the best out of available opportunities. Target youth are then enrolled for VGIF/ZACHEDO entrepreneurship training and business development programs.
Working with youth and young women to form savings sub-groups each with 5 members. Through these sub groups women generate income for themselves and their businesses and co-guarantee each other for business fund requisition.
Business visits to evaluate record keeping practices amongst youth businesses. Basic accounting skills are taught to enable youth identify the strength and weaknesses of their business.
Disbursement of youth funds targets youth especially young women living with HIV/AIDS and single mothers to foster business growth and development for lifestyle sustainability. The beneficiaries are youth aged 18-30 years. The major pillars of these initiatives are enterprise development, business skills training and development.
